Portuguese trains are crowded at certain times, remember to book well in advance. For fast (Alfa Pendular and Intercidades), reservation is mandatory.

Tickets (Tickets Rover) 7, 14 or 21 days to move at will for a fixed price and first class only, are on sale in major stations and travel agencies. But it does not seem that these formulas are highly profitable, unless you want to know what was in the country from top ... Only valid Regionais Inter-Regionais and in Coimbra.

Several categories of trains: the Regionais (Regional singular) that constitute the most extensive network, the Inter-Regionais (these are bus) and Intercidades (faster than the first). The Alfa Pendular is the train that connects the southernmost (Faro) in the far north (Braga), via Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto (among others). Fast, clean, quiet and comfortable.
In addition to the Lisbon-Coimbra-Guarda, the 2 most popular trips are Lisbon-Porto and Lisbon-Faro.

 

By bus (autocarro)

 

The bus network, dense, is served by large comfortable buses (Pullman with AC for long journeys), more frequent trains, but also often more expensive. It is necessary to book several days in advance in high season and the day before midseason.
Buses of the national company Rede Expresso (by far the most common) make the direct connections between major cities (Tel. 707-22-33-44). Other private companies also serve a lot of domestic destinations: Eva, Renex, Rodonorte, Internorte, etc. In some areas, there are local companies.
